Humayun's Tomb

Humayun was the second Mughal emperor and is buried in this tomb. Humayun ruled modern Afghanistan, Pakistan, and parts of northern India from 1530-1540 and again from 1555-1556. (See Wikipedia for a full account of his life.) Humayun was a scholar but died on March 4, 1556 when he fell down the stairs of his library carrying an armload of books. He was succeeded by his son Akbar who later had enormous influence on India. Humayun's tomb was built in 1565 and commissioned by Humayun's senior widow. The graves in the structure include Humayun's wives and that of his son. The building and surrounding gardens were the inspiration for the Taj Mahal (which was completed in 1643). Humayun was important for importing Persian ideas of art and architecture into India, an influence seen in many structures in India today. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humayun
